Music literacy

Have you ever heard of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata? Whenever you listen to it, you may got a feeling that you are fronting the sea, from where moon is rising up slowly. Moonlight lighten up the sea water and everything becomes so peaceful and enjoyable. That is the power of music, there is no boundary between language, culture and religion, people understand it and get amazing emotional impress only by listen it by heart.

Music is one of the most fantastic thing exist in the world. Consist of several simple notes, it can convey the most complex feeling of the composer's. For example, when the composer is delighted by the beautiful scene, and edged to express his or her feelings, the tempo may become moderate. When other people listen to this, he or she may get the same feeling as the composer, that is how information conveyed by music. Hundreds kind of music has been created, dating from the ancient times, people get mental released from listening to them. It is kind of literacy, for it can be used as a way to communicate and transmit information.
Music is not only composed by humans, it can be heard everywhere in our nature. Do not trust me? Just have a deep breath in the early morning, close your eyes and listen it by heart! The bird is singing , the leaves are weaving..Can you feel the wind touching your face and whispering in your ears? When you listen this by your heart, you may find yourself getting so close to the nature, and may gain deeper understanding of our world and your own life, which you never thought of before.

Reading literacy

In the temperary society, it is no longer a topic if people has the ablility to read and write, since it has long been a necessary to survive in this world. However, the “reading ability” I refer to is not confine to ‘know the word’, but has the ability to understand behind the words. To what extent people understand the auther’s purpose, and how much they can take in are the problem I want to talk about. In this essay, I would like to explain this in two reading catergories-acdamic reading and literature reading.
In my acdamic study, reading is definitely essential to aquire knowledge, since almost all textbook, course materia and internet information are word-based. To understand the knowledge, not only do I need understand the word, but it is necessary to have certain acdamic backgroud. For instance, I must learn basic math formular and roles to understand an advace math text book. In other word, the extent of how well we learned from previous study contribute a lot in our further study progress. In my major field, the ability to read accouting report, professional lauguage related to economic and accounting analyze is essential. To gain this reading ability thereby could standing out in the compititive job maket, the only thing I could do is study hard and learn from the very basic thing.
. As for the literature reading, the ablity to understand is more related to the person’s experiences and understanding of the world. There are an old saying goes, a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes, even reading the same book, people may get extreme different understanding. Compare to acdamic article, literature book is more likely to be wrote in an abstract way, in other words, there are always more behind words. Every story has a deeper meaning, either a critical reflection of social problem, or auther’s personal philosophical understanding about world. This reading ability is also important, for it is widely related to a person’s character.
To be brief, reading literacy is the abiltiy we understand the word-based aritical, not only the suface meaning, but the deeper thought expressed by the auther.

computer literacy

Literacy is definitioned by the meaning of the ability of understanding, interpreting and creating everything that carries meanings. When being asked what kind of literacy do I have, the first one that come into my mind is the computer. But why is so? Just have a look at my single day of life: getting up in the early morning, the first thing I will do is to switch on my laptop, check the email, look at morning news, and check face book to see if there is something new happened among my friends. Then when taking the whole day of classes, I also carry my laptop. I would like to do this because taking notes on laptop is far more efficient and clear. Using laptop, I can also look at PPT without having to seat in front of the classroom to get a clear look at the screen.when finishing classes, I spent the rest hours of the day surfing Internet, using Microsoft-office software to do my homework and chatting online.So how could I imagine a day to survive without the help of computer? And I believed the situation is just as same as mine for the whole modern society. Especially for our generation, computer is just like a daily necessity we use and it also act as a platform connecting the whole global world. As for me, I go shopping, get connect with my family and do almost everything one can imagine on Internet. To keep up the pace of world where globalization accelerating in a fascinating speed, the master of computer literacy is not a additional skill but a basic requirement. However, the well proficiency in computer may also be treated as an asset, since employers are more willing to hire individual who can use computer helping their company runs in a cheaper and faster way. I take computer class since middle school, and still working hard to improve it. The well up in Microsoft-office software and surfing information ability help me a lot in both academic study and daily life.

What is literacy?

What make human different from a animal is that they has the ability to think and comunicate. Not only can we just using speaking lauguage as the way of knowing things, we can aslo learn things from the record privious individrals leaving behind. Although there are many ways to do this record, just like a song, or a story telling from generation to generation. The most effecient way is what people can "see" and "keep" it, either by word or visualize. In my point of view, the ability to understand and create that kind of way of record is what it is called literacy, whose category can be various greatly. A book, a movie or articles published on internet can all be treated as a kind of literacy.

In this genre portfolio assignment, the three types of genre I choose to write was movie, novel and TV show. In this memo, I would like to give a brief introduction to each of them.
The first genre I wrote was a movie. As everyone knows, movie has become an important part of our life, since it can provide great visual entertainment. Base on its content and purpose, movie can be divided into several categories- comedy, history, scary, ect. For it involves almost every aspect of life, each kind of people can find something he or she interested in. By using properate background music, light and shot angle, a movie can give a strong touch to its audience. Although the technique of theme production can be various from movie to movie, one thing is always in common, that is, the intendence of telling people something. A good movie is attractive not only by its plot, but also has the ability to leave its audience in deep thinking. The one I wrote is a suspense moive, which is a quite typical one in that type. There is a puzzle at the beginning of the story, someone dead, and the whole movie is to trace the killer and to find the truth. People who like logical thinking and adventure may enjoy it a lot. The thing make this movie especial is that it also combines religion and philosipy thought, which make the movie of great depth.
The second genre I choose is a novel. It can be the most common literature in our society, since it is often a lot of fun reading them. Novel always record a complete story, which has main character while the whole story developed surround it. The focus of the content may differs from history to individral life while its audience can be covered in every age and social position. A novel is a reflection of writer’s thought, it is his or her personal view about life. Reading a novel is like reading a person’s inner world- no matter the story is real or not. The novel I choose is a rather ridiculous one, but there is more behind the story. Just like novels of this genre, it satirized certain problems existed in temprol society. For the purpose of novel in this kind is always let people realize something they often see it blind, it’s aimed audience is just normal citizens, especially educated individrals.
This last genre is a TV show. It is a kind of entertainment TV program we watch everyday. There is always a host and several rater, every time it invited different people on show to present them. Many audience may on the spot and give their support to the player. It is quite a popular show, since people whoever seeking relax in his or her leisure time may enjoy it. The one I write in this paper is a talent show, and its purpose is to make ordinary but talented people reach their dreams of becoming super star. The form is typical but its idea is quite a new wave in Chinese TV show history.

Who has the sin? – Thought from the movie "seven"

“Ernest Hemingway once wrote’The world is a fine place and worth fighting for’, I agree with the second part.”, said by William Somerset.

There was a strong feeling of desperation when I finish watching this movie. Who has the sin? The whole story was about tracing the killer of a series murder- a tracing of “justice”. But where the justice actually lies? The “victim”, the obese man, a disgusting man who could barely stand up, can we tell he is innocent? The woman, who treasured only the outside beauty and even can not live without it, getting proud for this and ignoring her own ugly inside, can we say she is innocent? And even the tracer himself, David, whose position is the represent of “justice”, turn out to lost control in facing of wrath, which is part of the sins the killer wants to alert people, can we say he is innocent?

Gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, pride, lust and envy, which can be treated as the seven deadly sins of Catholicism, seem have been out of the mind of our society for long. In such a world where laws play its role efficiently, protecting the one should be protected and punishing the one should be punished, people just living under the regulation of laws and lead their own life. Seldom has they thought of the original sins, which are so commonly existed in our society, or even some of them did come up with the idea that it is “bad”, they just choice to see it blind. For people has get used to the way they originally lived, they just living under the default pattern of life and close his or her eyes to those dirty dot.
Is that one tend to live a happier life choosing to be numb as well in facing of the whole numbly world? Just as the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun argued in one of his article, it is kind of mercy not to wake up sleeping citizens in facing of destruction, which is a metaphor of the loneliness and pains people suffered when conscious to the darkness of society but fall to find ways to change. The situation is just like the killer in the movie. The awareness of the dirty dots and numbly society make him desperate, and feel unendurable to keep living. Instead of being unconcerned and compromising to those “sins”, he managed to awake people, although in the wrong way- to punish.
Although we can not deny that the way the killer choosed is too extreme, we can not just casting him aside without thinking anything. Just as the words said by William Somerset at the end of the movie: “The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for”, and he is right when saying “I only agree with the second part”. The world is

 far from perfect, but the only thing we can do is to fight for the best of it. Perhaps when each of us act in this way, the sins would eventually disappear and the world would become as fine as it originally is.

Critical Analyze of the novel-"The metamorphosis"

  Have you ever imagined that waking up the other day morning, only to find yourself changing into a weird animal? Things happened in Franz Kalka’s famous novel “The Metamorphosis”, which tells a story about travelling salesman named Gregor Samsa, and his experience of transforming into a horrible vermin. Samsa used to be the economic backbone of the family and they used to living peacefully and happily. After the transformed, his mom and sister change the attitude gradually and treating Samsa as a burden. At the end of the story, Samsa dead in desperate, still loving and concerning his family.

  The story is ridiculous but the meaning behind words is quite thoughtful. For it was written during the depression and unrest period after world war Ι, when many people are becoming lose faith about capitalism society. The story is a true reflection of the darkness of the society and the indifferent relationship between individuals. Just as the novel describes, the attitude towards Samsa has been converted from sympathy, concerned of the beginning to bored, and eventually disguised, from which we could see the whole world of coldness-even between family. It seems that all relationship between individual are built on benefit, no matter how close they look, nothing could left without a profit.
  Plenty of physiological portrayal is used in this novel, in expressing of the loneliness and panic of Samsa after his transform. Keeping recalling his past and thinking about future, the gap between expectation and reality make him feel desperate and painful, which is also the common phenomenon exist in society. It can be said that the world the novel described is both “real” and “ridiculous”. To say it is“real”, the inner world description is vivid and it is a true reflection of normal people’s thought, while on the other hand, the whole structure of story is base on emblem and are “mythic”. However, the point is not the fact that people could transform to a vermin, it is to understand the mood and spirit transcending the story itself, which is the real thing the author want to express.

The popularity of talent show- a reflection of social fickleness

  Everyone has a dream of becoming super star, but how can we be that just as ordinary people? A new talent show called “super girl”, which intends to help ordinary but talent people achieve their dreams, was introduced to China and becoming the rage throughout the year 2005 to 2007.

 It has been the heatest topic in one’s leisure at one time, it can be seen almost everywhere that people gathered, discussing who will win in the next show, whether the rater is fair, or anyting gossip related to the show. The profit has been huge, for millions of people vote by chargeable massage for their support player and advertisement profit was rather considerable.
  How could this show be so successful? People crying for the lose of their support player and yelling for their victory, it seems that the show has produces so many super stars successfully over the night. The tend of this kind of show has been booming ever since, for billion of teenagers and youth lining in the competitive selection spot and waiting for project themselves. However, to trace the sourcs of this phenomenon, I would say that it may due to fickleness of our society, which reflected by the ethos of pursuing rapid success and the willingness of rape without sown.

  The show also engage profound negative impact among teenagers. For there is a survey argued that when asking a group of children what they what to do in the future, half of them said “a singer”, or “a dancer”. While experts were confused by the result, one teacher explain in worry that children watch those talent shows and it has become the heated topic they talk about. Many of them want to become famous over night as well, just like the player did in the talent show. The situation may give rise to sever impact, since students may not concentrate on they academic study any more, as they thought they could be success as well in a far easier way.

However, As every success of a popular show or a best seller must have closely correspond to the public interest, they can also be the reflection of the public thought in certain period. And from the popularity of the “super girl”, we could see the strong sense of fickleness, which can be treated as an illness existed in our society.

A normal day of my life

Time flow quietly and quickly these days, for I have been in Michigan State for almost half a year, the scene I was leaving Beijing airport and say good bye to my family was just like happened yesterday. Life there was so peaceful and regular. Everyday just repeat itself but quite fulfilled.
I run a pretty regular time schedule this semester. I wake up 6:00 am everyday and eat my breakfast on 7 am, my classes are all arranged before 2 pm, thus I have plenty of time to do whatever I want after class. Normally, I take a snap after finish my class which could make me energetic afterwards. I am quite an internet addict and would like to spent the whole afternoon in front of the laptop, surfing the Internet, watching movie online or chatting on QQ. I am just quite used to living in that virtual world and enjoyed myself in it. I am also quite a active girl, I go to gym almost every night, playing table tennis, swimming in the poor or working out in the fitness room. I feel good and pressure released after doing these, and could better concentrate on my academic study later at night, which is the time I usually do my homework and review things. Going to bed before 12am, I can always find myself energetic the morning of next day.
Healthy and regular life style contribute a lot to the efficient study as well as good impression we give others. My life here is like what I described above, quiet but fulfilled, which I enjoy I lot.
